In the mid 1950`s the Kirkby Family first imported Santa Gertrudis cattle from America. These cattle were the foundation of the Wave Hill Stud. In more recent years Wave Hill has had many major achievements at both shows and sales. The stud holds the record price for an unled bull sold at auction of $45,000. They have also consistently sold bulls for excellent averages for many years in both NSW and QLD.
In the show ring Wave Hill has won broad ribbons at both Sydney and Brisbane Royal Shows with the high light being Grand Champion Bull at Brisbane RNA in 1994. Wave Hill has always concerntrated on breeding middle of the road cattle that are fertile and efficient. It has been important that the cowherd is very low maintenance with cows expected to calve unassisted. Good small teats and good shaped udders are highly desirable and very hereditary. Doing ability is also strongly emphasized. For many years now we have been working to produce bulls with good trim sheaths and excellent scrotal measurements, we feel we have now consistently achieved this.
