Dunlop Stud

2009 Calf Drop

Dunlop Santa Gertrudis Stud operated by Scott and Rebecca Dunlop of "Jingeri" Proston, (200km NW of Dalby) is based on a herd of 1300 purebred females (approx. 500 of which are Classified cows).  The Dunlop family have been breeding Santa Gertrudis Cattle for over forty years in the Brisbane Valley and South Burnett region.

"DUNLOP" stud was officially registered in 2000, the first draft of bulls also being sold in this year.  Since then the number of bulls in the sale draft has increased steadily every year, to a point where DUNLOP now sells over 50 bulls per year through both auction and paddock sales. Approximately 40 rising 2 year old bulls will be presented at the inaugural Santa Central Sale in 2006.

Dunlop Stud commenced showing with a small team in 2004, in this short time it has enjoyed success in the show ring both locally and regionally.  Receiving Reserve Junior Champion Brisbane Ekka 2005 with  Dunlop Fraggle winning 1st 20-22mth class Brisbane Ekka 2005; Dunlop Freestyle placed 2nd & 4th in the 16-18mths class Goondiwindi Feature Show 2005 and Junior Champion Toogoolawah 2004 repectively.

This success has spilled over into the sale ring, with a number of bulls selling to breeders of good quality Santa Gertrudis, highlights include :

  • $22,500 Dunlop Fraggle sold 2005 to Yugilbar Stud
  • $19,000 Dunlop Freestyle sold 2005 to Yarrawonga Stud
  • $18,000 Dunlop Farenheit sold 2005 to Watasanta Stud
  • $20,000 Dunlop Elmo sold to 2004 to Yarrawonga Stud
  • $9,000 Top Price Wandoan Sale 2004
  • $26,000 Dunlop Donk sold 2004 to Dangarfield Stud

Some of this success can be attributed to the Dunlop Family's effort to use a broad range of genetics with sires currently in use being sourced from Yarrawonga, Dangarfield,Gyranda, Eidsvold Station, Diamond H, Rosevale, Moongana, Warrillee, Dundee, and Kendara.  Yarrawonga Merchant, purchased in 20001 for $30,000  has played a major part in the rapid success of the Dunlop Stud, with his progeny topping the Brisbane Valley sale for the past 2 years.

Hardiness is a feature of the Dunlop Bulls, having been bred on coastal forest country within the tick line. As the saying goes, "You can take the cattle from east to west, but not west to east."
