Hillside

Hillside Stud was founded in 1999 by Max and Leola Leggett and their sons Craig and Ross, using a females base from Glennie Richards 'Diamond T' stud (Est 1965).  The Hillside Stud today is comprised of aproximately 150 breeders, plus replacements run at 'Lachlan', 25km south of Tamworth, fronting the eastern side of the New England Highway.

Previously the home of a Shorthorn stud, ‘Lachlan’ is ideal for a stud operation with a mixture of both native and improved pastures, paddocks for single-sire mating, a lane-way system, and then also good yards and water. The purchase of ‘Lachlan’ has allowed all stud females and sires to be on the one property for the first time since in Hillside began.

We only offer a small number of bulls for sale each year as a result of a strict and continuous culling program, starting from when calves are first marked, right through until sale. Strong emphasis has always been placed on breeding cattle that can perform in the paddock, unassisted, in both the good seasons and the bad. Specifically, we aim for cattle with good weight gain and doing ability, as well as structural correctness, breed character and skin/hair type. Cows that fail to go in calf are culled, thus always ensuring that our cattle are very fertile. The bulls which we are offering for sale are bred to be practical, efficient and reproductively sound, with strong emphasis on economic returns.

Over the last few years, we have undertaken several AI programs and have continued this into 2010 with good success.  2010 has also seen our first venture into embryo transfer from which we have had strong results, flushing from several of our top-performing female lines.  Sires used in these programs include:

  • Waco Landlord
  • Yarrawonga Omen
  • Waco Nightcap
  • Waco Odessey
  • Waco Jupiter
  • Waco Freeman
  • Wave Hill Major
  • Waco Radar

2010 is once again seeing us offer a reduced number of bulls at Santa Cetnral.  We have made the decision to offer only those bulls at Santa Central which are potential sire material, ensuring that you can have the highest confidence in any Hillside bull which is being offered for sale.  We believe that with each year that passes the quality of our cattle increases and this year is no different.  We welcome pre-sale enquiries and look forward to seeing you this year's sale.
